The Abbey of San Galgano is a Cistercian abbey, located 30 kilometers away from Siena, in the municipality of Chiusdino. What makes it a popular tourist destination is the absence of its roof, which collapsed due to a lightning strike in 1786. The history of the abbey is closely linked to the Hermitage of Montesiepi, where we find the famous ‘sword in the stone’.
The noble knight Galgano Guidotti, after a radical conversion, took the Cistercian habit and decided to erect a chapel on Mount Siepi, where he thrust his sword into a rock outcrop and lived as a hermit until his death in 1180. After his canonization, the construction of the Abbey of San Galgano began under the Cistercian order.
